March is Music in Our Schools Month. For almost 40 years, March has been officially recognized to highlight all the music education within our schools and communities.
Music is a vital component of a well-rounded education, allowing students to learn how to work in harmony with one another, grow in self-esteem, and learn about history and culture through the lens of music. Music is an artwork that takes dedication, skill, and discipline but also fosters creativity and allows for individual perspectives.
Within Rochester Public Schools, music is taught as early as Kindergarten and becomes an optional elective for high school students. In middle school, students get to choose to do band, orchestra, or choir.
Music choices are a one-year commitment for which students must register each spring year. The 2024-25 school year deadline was Friday, March 1st.
In orchestra, students have the opportunity to learn one of four instruments:
Bass
Cello
Viola
Violin
